Lesson 3, Topic 1

1.0: IDENTIFYING the PARTS of life SO THAT the POSSIBILITY of living a good one EXISTS.

Lesson Progress

So as you start to identify all the parts of your…

…professional, financial, and personal purposes, you may be tempted to come up with your own labels — and that’s kind of okay for now.

It’s okay because this is your life we’re talking about, and you need to be fully bought in.

It’s only kind of okay because when you work and study with others in this tribe, you’ll want to use language that’s common to the tribe, so that everyone can quickly locate themselves in any narrative and contribute.

So what I recommend — if you choose to use a different word than we do — is to put the original word right next to it.

For example if you want to use “Charity” rather than “Helping Others” then you might just write Charity (Helping Others) for three reasons.

      1. So that whoever you’re working with knows what you’re talking about.
      2. So that you can start to adopt the original language if and when you find it to be more effective.
      3. So that you don’t get confused or lost.

Also there are some…

…mechanics to understand about the terms “Purposes” and “Parts”.

First — it is context that determines whether something is a “Part” or a “Purpose.” Here’s what I mean.

Operationally speaking, there are about 12 “Parts” to our personal lives.

But since these are the ultimate objectives — the things that either produce or destroy our ability to live a good life — I refer to them as Purposes.

Another way to say that is: they are the Destination.

You’ll notice that each “Purpose” has its own parts.

For instance, Body is a “Purpose,” but it contains several “Parts” — things like food, shelter, health care and fitness.

A helpful way to think about “Parts” is that when they are produced and cared for, they create the positive impacts we’re after and mitigate or eliminate the negative impacts we must avoid if we are to fulfill our purpose.

So if “Purposes” are like destinations, then the “Parts” are the Waypoints we must hit to reach the final destination.

Now. Let’s start designing and discovering the purpose for which you were created.

As you go into this, it’s important to remember that our lives are the product of our distinctions. The stronger, more complete, and accurate our distinctions, the stronger we are.

So what we’re going to do next is first identify the parts of life that impact your ability to live a good life and lead others to do the same,

and second, create distinctions (Definition – Impacts – Parts & Practices) for each part.

IDENTIFY: Part 1

To identify is to know the nature and operations of a thing.

There are two fundamental levels of Identification.

The first is to understand the nature of a thing. That means we can describe it and understand the impacts it can — and cannot — produce.

The second level is to understand its operations — how it functions — so that we can control its impacts.

Inside of PURPOSE, we’ll be focusing on the…

…first level of identifying, which sets the foundation we’ll build off of in the Mastery 1.0 course — where we’ll be using it to create and control the impacts each part of life has on your ability to live a good life.

**Dog vs Purposeful Professionals**

So there are two ways to go about identifying that which impacts your ability to live a good life. The first is like a dog. The second is like a purposeful professional.

A dog — or a person shaped by experience and environment rather than by purpose and professionalism — can accomplish the first level of identifying something only through carrots and sticks.

That means they go through life either being rewarded or punished until they recognize what something is and that it impacts them.

This method is often referred to as “The School of Hard Knocks.”

And to say that it’s a costly way of going through life — in terms of time, energy, creativity, and currency wasted — would be a gross understatement.

It doesn’t just mean that it takes you longer to notice and care for things like a mature adult would;

it also means you may never become aware of all that has — and all that will continue to — impact your ability to live a good life.

It’s like trying to lead yourself and those you love through a jungle with your eyes closed.

A purposeful human, however, can accomplish both the first level of identifying and much of the second by using the most powerful tool we have for thinking and design — WRITING.

Strategic Writing

When we write, we expand our understanding in ways that produce new thinking—thinking that leads to more powerful distinctions, which allow us to better identify and fulfill the purposes for which we were created.
